Lasix 10 mg/ml Injection - Furosemide Sodium

Composition
Each ml contains, as active ingredient, 10 mg furosemide.
Excipients : Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Chloride, Water for Injections

Properties
Lasix is a medicine which increases urine excretion (loop diuretic)

Indications
- Oedema due to cardiac, hepatic and renal disease.
- Adjunctive therapy in acute pulmonary oedema and cerebral oedema where intense and rapid onset of diuresis is desired.

Contraindications
Lasix 20 mg is contra-indicated in patients with :
- renal failure accompanied by lack of urine formation (anuria)
- hepatic coma and precoma
- electrolyte deficiencies, e.g severaly reduced blood levels of potassium (hypokalaemia), or of sodium (hyponatraemia)
- decreased volume of blood in the body (hypovolaemia) - with or without reduced blood pressure (hypotension) or dehydration
- hypersensitivity to furosemide or any of the excipients (see >>Composition<<). Patients allergic to sulphonamides (e.g sulphonamide antibiotics or sulphonylureas) may show crosssensitivity to furosemide.

Dosage
In general, the dose used must be the lowest which is sufficient to achieve the desired effect. Unless otherwise prescribed, the initial dose for adults and adolescents of 15 years or over is 20 to 40 mg Lasix (1-2 ampoules) intravenously or, in exceptional cases.

If after a single dose of 20 to 40 mg Lasix (1-2 ampoules) the diuretic effect is not satisfactory, the dose may be increased stepwise by 20 mg (1 ampoules), at two-hourly intervals, until satisfactory effect is obtained. The individual dose thus established should then be given once or twice daily.

Acute Pulmonary Oedema
An initial dose of 40 mg Lasix (2 ampoules) is administered intra-venously. If a satisfactory response does not occurred within one hour, the dose may be increased to 80 mg injected slowly intravenously.

Cerebral Oedema
The following procedure is recommended, pending further experience; intravenous injection of 20 to 40 mg thre times daily.

Special Notes
Although administration of Lasix 20 mg only rarely leads to hypokalaemia, a potassium-rich diet 9lean meat, potatoes, bananas, tomatoes, cauliflower, spinach, dired fruit, etc.) is always advisable. Occasionally, treatment with potassium-containing or potassium-sparing preparations may be indicated.

  1. Furosemide is a loop diuretic (water pill) that is used to treat fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis, or a kidney disorder such as nephrotic syndrome. This medication prevents your body from absorbing too much salt, and thus removes excess salt and water from the body through urine.
